How to read Canela

The keys Canela prints in its own catalogs, gathered on one page: what each letter of a code means, which grade suits which material, which chipbreaker suits which cut. Every line names the catalog page it comes from.

Insert code key

An ISO turning insert code, position by position, with Canela’s own values. Take CNMG120408MC-TN15: C N M G are shape, clearance, tolerance and type, 12 04 08 are size, thickness and corner radius. After the corner radius come the chipbreaker and the grade, for example MC-TN15.

The box label marks the material groups the insert suits: a filled dot for the main application, an empty dot for an extended one, with the feed (fz, mm/r) and the cutting speed (vc, m/min) for each. A23

Material groups

Grades and cutting data are given per ISO material group. Canela marks the groups on the box label and in every table.

PSteel
Machining, cementation, tempered and constructional steels.
MStainless steel
Canela’s English line for this group repeats group P on this page; the name is Canela’s.
KCast iron
Grey cast iron, tempered iron, spheroidal cast iron, CGI, sintered iron.
NNon-ferrous materials
Wrought and cast aluminium alloys, copper, copper alloys, non-metal materials.
SHeat-resistant alloys and titanium
Ni and Co-base alloys, Ti alloys.
HHard materials
Hardened steels (≥ 45 HRC), chilled castings, hard cast irons.

Grades

Which grade suits which material, from Canela’s grade chart. A bar shows where the grade sits in each group, from the hardest-wearing end (05) to the toughest (40, 50).

Chipbreakers

Each chipbreaker works in a window of cutting depth and feed. Enter your cut to see which windows hold it.

Chipbreaker ap, mm f, mm/r Where Canela uses it
FC 0.2–2.5 0.08–0.3 Light finishing at high speeds. A04
FMC 0.5–2.5 0.05–0.25 Light cutting of carbon and alloyed steel; copying and back turning; workpieces of 200–300 HB. Double-sided. A04
CC 0.2–1.5 0.05–0.4 Finishing steels and cast iron, with the performance of cermet. A04
MC 1–3.5 0.15–0.35 General purpose on all types of steel and stainless steel. A04
MFC 0.5–4 0.15–0.5 Light duty on carbon alloys and stainless steel. A05
MHC 1–5 0.2–0.8 Medium cutting of carbon and alloyed steel; first choice for rough cutting of mild steel. Double-sided. A05
RC 1.5–5 0.3–0.5 The strongest double-sided chipbreaker: high feeds and depths that normally need single-sided inserts. A05
KC 1–4 0.2–0.5 First choice for medium cutting of cast iron. A05
TC 1–4 0.1–0.5 Medium cutting of stainless and mild steel, light cutting of difficult materials. Double-sided. A06
..NGP 0.1–4 0.1–0.25 Medium duty on tough materials, above all chrome-nickel alloys. A06
..NMA 1–12 0.2–1 Short-chipping materials; strong edge. Double-sided. A06
..NMM 2.5–6 0.4–0.6 Single-sided; positive edge for low cutting forces. A06
..NMX 0.5–3 0.1–0.4 Light duty on steels and other materials. A06
AL 1–10 0.1–0.75 Aluminium, light alloys, non-ferrous metals, plastics. A07
AP 0.5–8 0.1–0.7 Aluminium, light alloys, non-ferrous metals, plastics. A07
..MR 0.5–4 0.15–0.4 Finishing and medium duty; low-strength and stainless steels. A07
..MT 0.5–4 0.15–0.4 Light to medium duty with low cutting forces; also short-chipping cast iron. A07
..MW 0.2–4 0.1–0.3 Short-chipping materials; strong edge. Double-sided. A07

A name with two dots, such as ..NMA, is read from letters 2 to 4 of the insert code itself (CNMA, WNMA). The windows are each chipbreaker’s main application area as printed on A04–A07; both scales are logarithmic, like the small charts beside each chipbreaker in the catalog.

Clamping systems

The first letter of a toolholder code names how it holds the insert. What Canela designs each system for, from page A62.

DDimple lock
Holds the insert still under high feed or heavily interrupted cuts.
MWedge clamp
Strong clamping for negative inserts in heavy duty work.
M-KDouble lock
Rigid clamping of negative inserts; first choice for negative ceramic and cermet inserts with a center hole.
PLever lock
A wide range of applications; first choice for general purpose turning holders.
CTop clamp
Flat positive inserts, with an added or a sintered chipbreaker.
SCenter screw
Positive inserts with a center hole, held by a Torx screw.
